This artwork is split into seven scenes from the world\u2019s oldest capital city Damascus, the city of culture.
\nThese scenes are from my memory.<\/p>\n

The first and second scenes make up a section of one of the oldest mosques in the Islamic world, Al-Umayyad mosque, which is famous for its\u2019 spectacular designs.<\/p>\n

As Damascus\u2019 old city holds seven doors and a surrounding fence, the third scene is of one of the city\u2019s seven gates.
\nThe fourth scene is of an old-style of dance, the \u2018melawyye.\u2019 <\/p>\n

The fifth scene is of one of Damascus\u2019 old alleys which are famous for their beauty, the architectural connection between the houses as well as their bright colours.<\/p>\n

The sixth scene is of one of Damascus\u2019 largest central squares. In the middle of the square is The Sword of Umayyad, which is an artistic creation that expresses Damascus\u2019 beauty.<\/p>\n

The seventh scene depicts a traditional old Damascene home with its\u2019 arches and a small fountain in the centre.
\nThe entire artwork is interwoven with Arabic calligraphy. With the addition of lighting, the artwork is given added dimensions that reveal the splendour of Damascus at night.<\/p>\n

All art pieces are made from reclaimed wood signifying rebirth and the possibility for hope in the future. The wood used in this piece was retrieved from the surviving parts of a wardrobe from a shelled home in rural Damascus.<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"
