The coloured strings are an expression for the flags of all the countries involved in the conflict in Syria. They forbid the citizen from expressing themselves, from ever speaking and even from screaming from grief over the loss of their children, their families and their loved ones. These countries force citizens to shut their mouths, using bullets fired directly at them. The people are forbidden to claim, demand or even ask for a life of their own.
The colours used for the strings show that each side is a piece of the restraints holding every thought from leaving your head.
The shadow here forms the barbed – wire fence which imprisons the oppressed citizen – physically and emotionally. It tells them that they can’t cross their limits set or they will be shot. They have the people incarcerated and enslaved under their command, each population will serve under a country depending on which piece of the pie you live in.
All art pieces are made from reclaimed wood signifying rebirth and the possibility for hope in the future. The wood used in this piece was retrieved from the surviving parts of a kitchen of a shelled home in rural Damascus.
